The delightful small town of Appleby-in-Westmorland boasts a Moot Hall, Appleby Castle, ancient churches and buildings. The town is the home of the famous Appleby Horse Fair which is held every year in early June.

The River Eden flows through the town. The beautiful Eden Valley is perfectly placed for exploring the Howgills, Pennines and the Lakeland Fells. For less energetic forays, there are countless walks in the surrounding limestone country - Orton and Great Asby Scars, Sunbiggin Tarn, High Cup Nick and Smardale Nature Reserve to name just a few.

If gardens and historic houses are your thing, you will find Holker Hall, Levens Hall, Sizergh Castle, Dalemain House, Mirehouse and Acorn Bank all within easy reach. The forests of Cumbria - Grizedale, Whinlatter and Dodd are a short drive away - as are the lakes - Haweswater, Ullswater, Windermere, Thirlmere and Derwent Water.

The surrounding area is rich in wildlife with regular visits from buzzards, curlews, lapwings, oyster catchers etc. There are ospreys at Bassenthwaite and a bird of prey centre is just a few miles away, You may even catch a glimpse of a red squirrel!

There are so many places to eat and drink, you will be spoilt for choice but here are a few favourites: The Royal Oak ( within staggering distance! ), the Butcher's Arms in Crosby Ravensworth  (one of the very top pubs in Cumbria on TripAdvisor), the Queens Head in Tirrill, Kennedys Chocolate shop and cafe at Orton, Low Sizergh Farm shop near Kendal, George Fishers in Keswick and the Visitor Centre at Grizedale Forest.
